The Native Sun has kicked off the 10th annual Pot of Gold Halibut Derby this week with a bang! Jim Willard of
Whittier landed a 28.15lb halibut on the second day of the derby, setting the bar for the fish to beat - historically the winning fish for the tournament is between 38 lbs. and 44 lbs. San Pedro Bait Company has provided strong fin bait through the week, and is optimistic about a continued supply! The crew says that a 4 to 6 oz. Torpedo Sinker and a 1/0 to 3/0 hook along a shot of Fluorocarbon has had the best results for getting bit!
There is plenty of opportunity for cash and prizes to be won, as the Pot of Gold grows daily. Call us for reservations or info at 562-432-8993, or check out www.longbeachsportfishing.com for the Top 25 qualifiers list for the fish off, or for pictures from the boat and weigh in of the fish. The
Derby runs 9am-5pm Wednesday - Sunday, and continues for 8 weeks.
Included in the daily counts we are still landing some of those nice Sand Bass - 4lbs - 6lbs, and Sculpin.
